smoky baked beans

Skip out on the plastic-lined tins of baked beans and make a big batch that can be portioned out and stored in the freezer. Navy beans can be found in the bulk dry food section. They can be purchased using a paper bag (and sometimes your own container!)

ingredients

2 tablespoons molasses

1/4 cup water

1/4 onion, finely chopped

1 garlic clove, minced

1 tablespoon sun-dried tomato paste

1 teaspoon smoked paprika

1 teaspoon soy sauce

1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper

1 1/2 cups ready-to-eat navy beans*

1-3 teaspoons maple syrup, to taste

method

In a small stockpot on medium heat, add the molasses, water, onion, garlic, tomato paste, paprika, soy sauce and cayenne pepper. Bring to a boil and let it cook for 3-5 minutes. Stir in the beans and cook for another few minutes to warm through. Add the syrup to taste and enjoy!
